Graduating from Work to Retirement #19: A Teacher for Life

June 10, 2025 By E.J. Smith - Your Survival Guy

By mauri @ Adobe Stock

When you graduate from work to your retirement life, it can be jolting. It can be similar to when you leave school for the real world. When you leave the routine you knew and could do with teachers who guided you. Leaving teachers who believed in you can be hard. Leaving teachers who helped show you the way can be hard.

My mom was a teacher in Mattapoisett, MA, where Your Survival Guy grew up, and also in Rochester, MA. When I visit home, I’m never surprised how often she is stopped on the street to say “Hi, Mrs. Smith!” by someone older than me. When you’re a great teacher, you’re always “Mrs. Someone” to the child you taught.

When it comes to money, wouldn’t it be nice to have a favorite teacher stay with you? Imagine having a financial advisor who teaches you how to invest and then, when you retire—record scraaatch—he does too. “You’re retiring?” you ask. “Yep, at the end of the year,” he says.

That’s no way to enter retirement.

Many of you were taught by Richard C. Young’s Intelligence Report. You held on to his words like a book to be studied for a final exam. You didn’t view it as work. You liked it (especially the opening paragraphs) because you were rewarded for your efforts. Many of you who are clients of mine read his report like the Bible and are thankful you have a portfolio you’re familiar with.

In a perfect world, we would have our teachers stay with us for our entire lives. Maybe AI will do that, but I’m not banking on it. You want to enter retirement with an investment approach you’re familiar with and with an advisor who was taught by the same philosopher you were.

Action Line: Investing in retirement can get tough at times. Like a final exam, you want a guide who will be with you every step of the way. When you’re ready for our class to begin, let me know. He grew-up worshiping Neil Peart (RIP) of the band Rush, and loves the song Tom Sawyer—the name of his family’s boat, a Grady-White Canyon 306. He grew up in Mattapoisett, MA, an idyllic small town on the water near Cape Cod. He spends time in Newport, RI and Bartlett, NH—both as far away from Wall Street as one could mentally get. The Newport office is on a quiet, tree lined street not far from the harbor and the log cabin in Bartlett, NH, the “Live Free or Die” state, sits on the edge of the White Mountain National Forest. He enjoys spending time in Key West (RIP JB) and Paris.
