Graduating from Work to Retirement #17: Heart of June

June 6, 2025 By E.J. Smith - Your Survival Guy

By Volodymyr @ Adobe Stock

When you graduate from work to retirement, you’re doing something you’ve done before, like going from school to your working life—you’re taking one of life’s big steps. And there’s only a handful that are more stressful.

Retirement is a big change from working life. You got used to your working life, seeing your colleagues and doing your work. You saved. You had money coming in the door. You spent money. Now, all of a sudden, when you retire, you can feel like you’re lost at sea.

Don’t be. You worked too hard to get here. Your Survival Guy knows how you’re feeling because you tell me in our conversations what’s on your mind. You tell me you don’t want to spend too much of your money, but you need to spend it to survive.

Yes, there are rules to follow, like how much you draw, but part of this is art, not science. You don’t always know how much you need, and some years will be leaner than others. Spending can change with the seasons, and like the changing seasons, there’s an adjustment period. That’s OK, you got this.

Action Line: You’ve learned how to save, now it’s time to learn how to spend. When you’re ready to talk, email me at ejsmith@yoursurvivalguy.com. And click here to subscribe to my free Survive & Thrive letter.

E.J. plays a Yamaha Recording Custom drum set with Zilldjian cymbals. His first drum set was a 5-piece Slingerland with Zildjians. He grew-up worshiping Neil Peart (RIP) of the band Rush, and loves the song Tom Sawyer—the name of his family’s boat, a Grady-White Canyon 306. He grew up in Mattapoisett, MA, an idyllic small town on the water near Cape Cod. He spends time in Newport, RI and Bartlett, NH—both as far away from Wall Street as one could mentally get. The Newport office is on a quiet, tree lined street not far from the harbor and the log cabin in Bartlett, NH, the “Live Free or Die” state, sits on the edge of the White Mountain National Forest. He enjoys spending time in Key West (RIP JB) and Paris.
