When you graduate from school into the real world, it can be jolting. Suddenly, you’re going from cookouts on the quad to a 9-5 job, living for the weekends. As I’ve written to you in the past, it’s a wonder you got out alive. But somehow you did, and the last thing you want is to do that all over again. Sure, being in your 20s is cool, but being broke? Not so much.
Which brings us to your graduation from work into your retirement life. It’s a different kind of graduation, full of its own surprises and anxieties, but here’s the kicker that makes it all worth it. Unlike graduating into the real world, now you get to graduate into a world you have always imagined. One where you have all the freedom in the world. In other words, it’s time to have some fun.
Believe me when I tell you that it takes time to get adjusted. Going from zero to fifty may be fun in your new Corvette, but slowing down takes a little effort. One idea for you to consider is that life is never perfect. Life is full of challenges. But I believe you have what it takes to take charge of your retirement life much the way you did your working life.
Your retirement life will be different than the next person’s. There is no perfect roadmap. But making some lists of big and small things you’d like to accomplish can help you put one foot in front of the other. Just don’t put too much pressure on yourself. You’re retired. And remember, you’re never too old to say, “Someday I Will.”
