Countdown: Top 10 Bug-Out Basecamp Essentials: #2

August 22, 2013 By E.J. Smith - Your Survival Guy

Yesterday I recommended that you buy the Orvis Helios 7-weight 9′ Fly Rod in order to add protein rich fresh fish to your diet in a long-term disaster situation. But who’s protecting your bug-out basecamp when you head down to the river to cast a line? The aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy proved that it doesn’t take long for society to descend into chaos. Will you leave the wife and kids to face the looting hordes alone? Unlikely. And you can’t bring all your belongings with you everywhere you go, so you need to add security to your basecamp.

Today I’m recommending you buy the Sentry Executive Safe D-888. As with the fishing poles I mentioned yesterday, there are a number of great safes, and your personal preference may be different, but this safe is a great start. The benefits of the D-888 are many. For starters, it’s not enormous, so with a little planning you can get it to your remote bug-out location, but it’s not so small that someone could just pick it up and walk away with it either. The D-888 comes with concealed hinges, a combination lock, all steel construction, a re-locker, and hardened steel plating for drill attack protection. If you’re storing gold or other valuables at your bug out location, you need to have the protection of a safe.

He grew up in Mattapoisett, MA, an idyllic small town on the water near Cape Cod. He spends time in Newport, RI and Bartlett, NH—both as far away from Wall Street as one could mentally get. He enjoys spending time in Key West and Paris.
