There’s a reason why businesses have migrated to the South. Lower taxes and right to work laws are the draw. But what may be most important is the attitude of self reliance. Self reliance is the antithesis of what union bosses are selling. They’ve ruined Detroit and will continue to bully in Tennessee. The VW organizing drive was no doubt supported by HRM Obama. You can’t fix stupid. Here the Wall Street Journal outlines Obama’s hand-in-glove relationship with the UAW.
Big Labor’s potentates have traveled to Houston this week to regroup after Volkswagen employees in Tennessee rejected the United Auto Workers last week. They might consider that part of the reason for their failure is that their brand of highly partisan liberal politics alienates the very workers they are targeting.
So far we’ve heard more blame-shifting than soul-searching. UAW President Bob King is blasting conservative “special interest groups” and Republican politicians for speaking up against the union and even daring to mention the specter of Detroit.
Republicans did fight the organizing drive, but then the UAW also made their job easy. Grover Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform put up 13 billboards in Chattanooga linking the UAW to Democratic politicians and progressive policies. One billboard noted that the “United Obama Workers” spend “millions to elect liberal politicians including Barack Obama. ” The President isn’t popular in Tennessee, which he lost in 2012 to Mitt Romney by 20 points.
