With a “legitimate” conservative on the ballot, Alaskans came out to vote. When the choice between the semi-conservative Murkowski and a very conservative Joe Miller was put to Alaskans, they surprised everyone with their zeal for a real conservative. This trend is being replicated all across the country, in place like Florida, Kentucky, Utah and now Alaska. There are still a few primaries left, America could see a few more upsets before November.

Health care and other non-pension benefits are a $587 billion long term liability for state governments. That huge number is generally not subsidized by the state employees at all. State governments around the country need to rationalize their employment contracts to better mirror the private sector. Why should state workers be treated differently than their private sector counterparts?

While the president’s predictions for the stimulus program are often cited for their incorrect estimates of jobs “saved or created,” another Obama administration program has fallen far short of its promises. The Home Affordable Mortgage Program (HAMP) has been somewhat successful for only about 11% of the number of families that were promised help. Just one more failed Obama policy to remember in November.
