Eyes in Orbit: The Future of Missile Warning

Source: L3 Harris

L3Harris Technologies is advancing US missile defense capabilities by delivering infrared sensor payloads for the Space Development Agency Tracking Layer. The company completed all 16 payloads for Tranche 1 and has transitioned into producing Tranche 2 systems, supporting a faster, more iterative approach to space-based defense.

These payloads enable real-time detection and tracking of hypersonic and ballistic missiles—threats that legacy systems were not designed to handle. The broader program emphasizes rapid deployment, launching successive groups of satellites every two years to quickly expand global coverage.

While early phases faced integration and supply chain challenges, adjustments and increased investment have improved production timelines and efficiency. Overall, the effort demonstrates a shift toward faster, scalable space defense development, allowing capabilities to evolve continuously in response to emerging threats.
