Listening to the media over the last week might have given you the impression that the House Freedom Caucus held virtual veto-power over the House GOP agenda. But the New York Times writes that there were 33 Republicans who wouldn’t move to vote for the bill. Of this group, only 13 were House Freedom Caucus members, not enough to sink the bill by themselves. In fact, a majority of 20 of the House nay-sayers were not affiliated with the Freedom Caucus, ten of them even belong to the liberal-Republican Tuesday Group informal caucus. It takes 20 Republican defectors to kill a bill in the House, and even without the Freedom Caucus, this health care bill was doomed.
