In the neighborhood of Minneapolis known locally as “Little Mogadishu,” gang violence among the immigrant Somali population has erupted into a turf war that is taking lives. This is the same area that has elected the unhinged Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. Despite fleeing the violence of their homeland, the Somali refugees and their progeny in Minneapolis appear to have brought it with them.
Reports the Star Tribune:
A 17-year-old boy was killed and two men were injured in a shooting late Friday in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis, police said.
The three were among six people shot Friday night in Minneapolis in three separate incidents. Police did not say if the incidents were related. No arrests have been made.
In the most recent shooting, just before midnight, police received a report of shots fired in the 300 block of S. Cedar Avenue. Meanwhile, an ambulance was flagged down in the 2100 block of Riverside Avenue.
By the time police arrived, two victims were in the ambulance — the teenage boy, who was pronounced dead, and a 21-year-old man suffering from a noncritical gunshot wound, police said. The latter was taken to HCMC.
A short time later, police said, a third person, a 31-year-old man, arrived at HCMC suffering from a noncritical gunshot wound from the same incident.
Earlier Friday night, two 20-year-old men were shot and wounded on the North Side. According to police, officers were investigating a ShotSpotter activation when a man called 911 to say he had been shot, offering no clear location. Area hospitals were advised of the call in case any gunshot victims came in. Shortly afterward, the two men arrived at HCMC in a vehicle, and officers interviewed them there.
The victims told police that they were driving on W. Broadway when they heard gunshots and realized they had been shot. They were unable to provide any further information, police said.
Michael Walsh, reporting in PJ Media suggests that a lack of assimilation among the Somali community in Minneapolis is the cause of the problem. He writes:
There’s a problem, though. The Somalis are classified as refugees (from what? Their own societal dysfunction?) but traditionally refugees and displaced persons have been settled safely in DP camps until such time as their home countries have at least a semblance of order restored, and then they are sent home. But the Left has changed the definition to mean that “refugees” are now simply permanent Americans-in-waiting. The Greeks who came to America in the 19th and 20th centuries often stayed for a time, made some money, and then went back to their wives and children in Hellas; the same was true to a lesser extent of the Sicilians. But the likelihood of the Somalis ever returning to Somalia is nil.
Assimilation used to be the answer, but now that is politically incorrect: Balkanization is the order of the day. This is sometimes referred to as “diversity,” a descriptive term with no moral significance; it describes a condition, not a goal. But under its rubric, the Left has managed to overcome all sorts of “barriers,” including Chesterton’s Fence. Never heard of it?
