The Most Accurate Intelligence Indicator Comes With Breadsticks

The “Pentagon Pizza Index” is a theory that spikes in late-night pizza deliveries near the Pentagon may signal an emerging geopolitical crisis. The idea is that during major events, defense staff work late hours, leading to increased orders from nearby restaurants. The Economics Times reported that the Pentagon’s Pizza Index has accurately predicted 21 crises, including the 1990 Gulf War, the 1998 Clinton impeachment, and the 2024–2025 Middle East tensions.

Pentagon Sees High-Traffic Night Ahead of Operation Epic Fury

Some observers believe sudden surges in pizza deliveries can tip off investors and analysts to possible imminent US military action, as reported by Investors Business Daily. However, officials say the theory is mostly anecdotal and not a reliable indicator of military operations, noting that operational activity cannot be accurately inferred from restaurant delivery patterns alone.

Still, concerns about this phenomenon have influenced policy abroad. The Israeli Air Force has reportedly instructed personnel not to order food deliveries to the Kirya Military Headquarters, aiming to prevent spikes in orders that could inadvertently signal heightened military activity to outside observers. The Business Standard writes:

Also known as the Pentagon Pizza Report, the informal index is based on the idea that surges in late-night pizza orders signal that government and military officials are working extended hours to manage unfolding international crises. […]

The index relies on publicly observable spikes in foot traffic or delivery activity at pizza restaurants around the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. Supporters of the theory argue that sudden increases in orders, especially late at night, can indicate heightened activity inside the US Department of Defense headquarters. […]

The theory drew renewed attention in 6 Jun 2026, when Google Maps data showed a surge in activity at four pizza restaurants near the Pentagon during Israel’s attack on Iran.

The index has resurfaced again in recent weeks amid continued strains between Washington and Tehran. […]

The theory remains an example of how open-source data and social media speculation can intersect with high-profile global events, even as officials caution against drawing firm conclusions from such patterns.
