Ukraine Intensifies Strikes on Russian Refineries

Ukraine claimed responsibility for another drone strike on Rosneft’s refinery in Saratov, southwestern Russia, igniting fires in refining units as part of ongoing efforts to reduce Moscow’s oil revenues, according to Bloomberg. The attack, carried out by Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, marks the seventh strike on the facility this year. The Saratov refinery, capable of processing 140,000 barrels of crude a day and recently sanctioned by the U.S., is a key fuel supplier for Russia’s European regions. Kyiv says it has launched about 160 successful attacks on Russian refineries and oil infrastructure in 2024, as President Volodymyr Zelenskiy continues to urge Western nations to tighten sanctions on Russia’s energy sector. The refinery in Saratov has the capacity to process about 140,000 barrels of crude a day and is a key supplier of gasoline and diesel fuel to Russia’s European regions. It was sanctioned by the US last month as part of a package of measures targeting Rosneft and Lukoil PJSC. This was the seventh attack on the refinery so far this year.
