Dick and Deb’s Research Trip to Portland, Maine

March 26, 2009 By Richard C. Young

What a great little waterfront walking city. A first-rate hospital in the middle of town and a nice jetport add to Portland’s appeal, as do the Boston Red Sox minor league baseball team the Sea Dogs and the popular museum. Old Town Portland is not dissimilar to  Newport, RI in feel, but a good deal bigger. If you are a four-seasons person who likes city life, Portland is a great choice. For years, we have ordered fresh seafood from Browne’s Trading, and the company’s terrific retail outlet is right on the waterfront. We ate at Fore Street on a number of recommendations, and it is a spot you will not want to miss. Reserve well ahead. We loved walking up and down Munjoy Hill and stopping at many of  its neat little neighborhood cafes and markets. Try them all out. You can do it in an afternoon. I’ve included some walking tour pictures from Fore Street and the Munjoy Hill area. We stayed at a nice B&B, but next time we’ll try the Portland Regency Hotel and Portland Harbor Hotel (both better walking locations) based on advice given to us by some seasoned Portland mavens. There are lots of great shops in Old Town, one of which, Fiachre, is a special hidden gem for gardeners. Check it out, and enjoy Portland. We loved it.
