Drastic Changes, including Axing the Filibuster
In an interview with Steven Law (CEO of the Senate Leadership Fund), Kimberley Strassel (WSJ) talks with Mr. Law about the DNC convention several weeks ago and what is at stake at the Senate level.
Senator Chuck Schumer was telling everybody who would listen what he would do if they had total government control, including control of the Senate, and he made a point during his speech, … which is that the people who stood up to defend the filibuster, namely Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin. They’re going to be gone. “(Schumer) said that, and the crowd roared. I mean, they (Democrats) loved Chuck Schumer. That was a great applause line for them.”
People don’t understand how drastic the changes would come and they would come in a hurry if Democrats got it all, because it would be simply nothing standing between them and getting rid of the filibuster. Once they move that aside, then they just wave through the entire progressive revolution.
… they would be bound to determine, not merely to pass legislation on a policy level, but to make changes structurally, as you point out to the Supreme Court. They would add more states, so they get more permanent senators. If they had two more states, they get four senators such as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. That’s four senators. I can tell you, getting rid of a four seat majority in the next couple of cycles, overcoming that as a Republican would take a decade.
