Many on the Left are in a tizzy over President Trump’s proposal for a skills-based immigration program. Yet Liberals in the U.S. tend to swoon over our northern neighbor. They love Canada’s progressivism—its national healthcare system, for example, and, what Charles Krauthammer calls, its “matinee idol” liberal prime minister. What they are unable to embrace, however, is a merit-based immigration system for the U.S., which they call mean and racist. Merit-based immigration, not unlike what is found in Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, is a no-brainer, argues CK.
The United States is the place everybody wants to go, every immigrant. You find somebody on a raft on the South China Sea—where do they want to go? United States. We have the top 500 draft picks for the N.B.A. and instead we choose to pick people randomly out of the Karachi phonebook. This does not make sense. We should be doing what Canada and Australia are doing and cashing in on the fact that the world wants to come here. This is so obvious, it’s almost amazing that we haven’t done this and that I think is the core of the issue.
