By all accounts, Marine Le Pen left everything on the floor in the recent French presidential debate with Emmanuel Macron. But she couldn’t land a blow that knocked Macron out of the lead. Polls after the debate show strong support for Macron going into Sunday’s runoff election. It will be up to the French to decide whether they prefer Le Pen’s anti-Europe nationalism or Macron’s moderate globalism. Vincent Wood reports on the debate in the Express:
In a ferocious opening statement, Ms Le Pen said Mr Macron was acting arrogantly and attempting to speak for the voters without consulting them.
She said: “You need to show a little less arrogance before the election.
“It seems to me that you try to treat them as children.”
Ms Le Pen said she had enjoyed herself since the first round of voting last month because the period had allowed France to see the “real” Mr Macron.
