There is a petition on the British government’s website that demands a second referendum on Brexit. In just two days, 3.3 million British citizens have signed on, which will require Parliament to have a second debate on Leave or Remain this summer. This is ludicrous, John Fund explains in NRO:
It demands that the government restage the referendum because the winning vote for Leave was below 60 percent and was based on a turnout of less than 75 percent. But all British referendums (there have been two others in the last five years) have been decided on the basis of majority vote, and the turnout for the Brexit referendum was a full six points higher than the 2015 election that chose the current government.
Who are the people having the meltdown over Brexit? The elite, the coalition of the leaders, academics, journalists, crony capitalists, and government functionaries, writes Francis Menton in Manhattan Contrarian.
(Those) who believe that they and others like them are the experts and they should run the world with no accountability, and issue the orders to the productive people who pay the bills. Most of the members of this coalition currently live off some kind of government salary or grant or handout, and the rest of them expect to do so at some point.
For the moment, the forces of freedom and prosperity have at least had their voices briefly heard in Britain. But do not expect the totalitarians and vested interests to give up easily. I anticipate a protracted campaign of obstruction and delay, as the grafters desperately fight and claw to hang onto every last grant and perk.
Mr. Fund ends his piece on Brexit by quoting a man named Sam who is critical of the way the Remain poo-bahs conducted themselves: “The whole Remain campaign was really condescending. People hate being told that they don’t know what’s best for them.”
