Polls are looking very bad for the GOP do-nothing Congress and Senate. That probably isn’t much of a surprise to voters who elected the GOP legislators to help President Trump Make America Great Again, but who instead watched as Mike Johnson and John Thune sat on their hands for the last two years, only surfacing to the top of the swamp water long enough to waffle on reining in the President’s war powers after his unpopular attacks on Iran.
It would have been great to see Congress put legislative support behind the many positive actions being done by various departments of the Trump administration. How about the SAVE America Act, one of the most popular legislative proposals among GOP base voters? No. John Thune said he didn’t have time for it. Instead, Johnson and Thune passed the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, which Trump himself didn’t bother to sign because it was a bill “of minor importance.” That’s something to campaign on, huh?
In The Wall Street Journal, Matthew Hennessey says the GOP knows it’s about to lose big time. He writes:
GOP candidates understand what’s coming. Like four-day old spinach, they’re about to get creamed.
Even Ken Paxton is panicking. A main goal of Mr. Trump’s Dallas convention was to buoy the Texas attorney general’s failing Senate campaign against James Talarico. On Wednesday the New York Times published a secret recording of Mr. Paxton telling donors that the two-day rally had “dropped our numbers.”
Congressional job approval is not moving in the right direction for the GOP. The latest spread between those who approve of the job Congress has been doing and those who disapprove is -44 points.
