Democrats attacked Brett Kavanaugh, not because of any past misdeeds, but because of his religion and his constitutional viewpoint.
They created a sham to ruin his good name with unverifiable, baseless accusations against him in the hopes of preventing a white, Catholic family man from ascending to the Supreme Court.
The effect their disgusting efforts had couldn’t have been worse for Democrats. The GOP base is fired up now more than ever for the 2018 midterm elections.
Siobhan Hughes reports for The Wall Street Journal:
The fight over Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is showing signs it may be reinvigorating the Republican base, creating new calculations for the undecided senators on the eve of a vote that will reveal whether the judge can win confirmation.
Until now, Democrats had enjoyed an enthusiasm advantage, as core voters were motivated by opposition to President Trump’s policies and tweets. But Republicans have caught up. They have been energized after Judge Kavanaugh was accused of sexually assaulting a fellow teenager in the early 1980s, charges he has denied and which he said last week stem from pent-up Democratic anger over the outcome of the 2016 elections.
“There’s been a wake-up call to the Republican base,” said Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, which conducted a recent poll showing that the enthusiasm gap had closed. He said that the battle put front and center “the notion that there are Democrats in the Senate and Democrats in the House who could ascend to positions of power with the mid-terms and then the Republican control gets lost.”
The poll, from NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist, showed that 82% of Democrats said that the November elections were very important, compared with 80% of Republicans. That two-point gap compared with a 10-point gap in July.
