President Obama throws up his jobs pitch on a Thursday night, and America responds with what amounts to raspberries and duck lips by slamming the Dow with a 303-point down crack on Friday. America is fed up with “change you can count on,” as the change witnessed to date has had a horror tag stapled to it from Obamacare to the Supreme Court nominations of Kagan and Sotomayor to the booming federal regulatory operation that I will get to in a minute.
Today, over 50 million of our fellow Americans are on some form of federal welfare, of which nearly 40 million Americans are on food stamps. Hard to believe. Under President Barack Obama, the welfare state is in full bloom. And who pays for all of this? In one form or other, America’s small business owners and entrepreneurs foot the bill. When the welfare state is allowed to blossom, the federal government always comes calling with hat in hand. President Obama and his income redistributionists might have taken a history lesson from Calvin Coolidge before unleashing such a jobs bill turkey. The Obama jobs bill has about as much a chance of flying as did Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose. Calvin Coolidge was president from 1923 through 1929 and was tremendously popular in small town America. Coolidge believed, “The business of America is business.” Government needed to stay out of the hair of entrepreneurs like Henry Ford. Coolidge cut taxes, balanced budgets, slashed government spending, and hacked government debt by one third.
Today, America is stuck with a presidential anchor whose grading with Americans is at a historic low. The trademark of the Obama administration has been the overzealous regulation of business. President Obama’s regulatory czar (no congressional vetting needed here) is Harvard man Cass Sunstein. Earlier this year, as Human Events pointed out, law professor Sunstein refused to participate in the effort to identify job-smothering regulations. Yet according to Investors Business Daily, “If the federal government regulation operation were a business, it would be the 50th biggest in the country in terms of revenues and the third in terms of employees.”
Human Events concludes the task of scraping the underbelly of the stifling Obama administration by reporting that Obama’s fellow Harvard Law Review editor David Ogden (Obama placed this guy in the position of Deputy Attorney General) helped create jobs through “Project Gunrunner.” The cherry on the Obama/Harvard regulatory cake is from Harvard fellow and Obama “science czar” John Holden who believes that wealth redistribution is “absolutely essential” and recommends a “massive campaign” to “de-develop” the United States.
Can 2012 come quickly enough to flush this entire crowd? Are you doing your part to clean the slate and move America back to the Federal Republic form of government of Thomas Jefferson?
