A short letter to a relative about how we are holding up in Key West on lockdown.
Pam,
We have no problems at all. Key West is used to a couple of hurricanes every year so the current situation is pretty much the same, but easier because we have electricity.
All incoming visitors have been shut down. And it is a simple task because two-lane US 1 is the only road into our little island.
Our friends who manage the airport tell us that only a couple of planes (smaller jets) a day are coming in now, and they are pretty empty. We know this is so because our conch house, like all of Old Town, is directly in the flight path.
As for boating into KW, the Coast Guard stops ships at the six-mile reef. They can’t get near the docks.
As such, with all hotels and guest houses, restaurants and bars closed and seasonal residents mostly going or gone, we are down to a small core group of locals who have been through this sort of procedure every year since they were born.
We have been Key West residents for thirty years and have worked through far worse conditions often.
We are hunkered down in our palm and bamboo walled-off mini compound with zero seasonal neighbors. Once a day we walk to one of our three little local markets to pick up what we need for the day, just like every other day.
Few islanders are out and about. It is quiet and peaceful with a bright blue sky and a tropical breezes with temps in the low 80s. Plus we have our stash of AR7s and enough CCRI .22lr hollow points to start a small war.
So that’s that for today. Make it a good one up in the freezer belt.
