Some major players are out with predictions of a GOP landslide on November 2nd. Conrad Black is arguing that the GOP will take control of both the House and the Senate. The road to victory in the Senate runs through two major pillars of the left, Barbara Boxer and Harry Reid. Without taking Harry Reid out of the game, the Senate will not be won by conservatives this year. Sharron Angle has the support of Tea Party voters in Nevada, but she is beset by Scott Ashjian, a political rogue force who has weaseled his way onto the ballot as a candidate in the “Tea Party,” a fictional political party in Nevada that he and his lawyer dreamed up (likely with the help of Harry Reid’s campaign). Nevadans should not (and probably will not) be confused by this rouse. Americans are smarter today than they were in the pre-internet years. Political information is fast-flowing and abundant. The last Rasmussen Poll has Angle and Reid deadlocked within the margin of error.
In California, conservatives weren’t given a great choice in Carly Fiorina, but her appeal compared to Barbara Boxer is massive. Boxer has been one of the most liberal senators during her tenure in the upper chamber. Californians can change the face of the Senate by voting for Fiorina.
Dan Henninger at the Wall Street Journal lays out how bad the outlook is for Democrats. The key to the Democratic desperation is the fall in the approval ratings for President Barack Obama.
As you can see in the RealClearPolitics chart of presidential approval ratings, Americans turned negative on Barack Obama sometime in July. That’s when the “summer of recovery” was uncovered as false advertising by the administration.
Americans have woken up. The economy is in shambles and government is holding the country back, not helping it. Glenn Hubbard, a former Bush administration economic advisor is out with a book, Seeds of Destruction, which says the way out of economic malaise is a more efficient tax system. I agree. See an interview with Hubbard below.
Commentary by Deborah Young on Embassy-Bombing Trial in Jeopardy by Andrew McCarthy, National Review
The Obama administration claim that America doesn’t need to put terrorists before military tribunals was proven completely false this week when a civilian court rejected the use of a confession made by Ahmed Ghailani of his involvement in the embassy bombing in Tanzania. This is simply an outrage. A confessed foreign terrorist with no attachment to America should be treated like a prisoner of war, not an American citizen.
Comentary by E.J. Smith
Voters are fed up with the bipartisanship that defines Congress. Compromise is not what they were sent to Washington to do. Look at the mess the GOP enablers created. Case in point, Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine. She backed Obama’s stimulus bill and was the lone GOP vote for Obamacare in the Senate Finance Committee. The tea party is rising up to fight against the Snowe’s of Congress. Unfortunately she’s not up for reelection until 2012.
Rupert Murdoch speaking last night at the Media Institute Awards Dinner in support of embattled Washington, D.C. schools chancellor Michelle Rhee:
OCCASIONALLY I HEAR THE LEADERS OF THE TEACHERS UNIONS SAY THEY SUPPORT REFORM. BUT HERE I’M OF THE VIEW OF MICHELLE RHEE, A BONA FIDE REFORMER. IN A RECENT APPEARANCE ON “MEET THE PRESS,” MICHELLE CONFRONTED THE PRESIDENT OF THE AMERICAN FEDERATION OF TEACHERS, RANDI WEINGARTEN, ABOUT HOW THE UNION REACTED WHEN BAD TEACHERS WERE FIRED.
THIS IS HOW MISS RHEE PUT IT: “THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT IF THESE PEOPLE ARE INEFFECTIVE, AND IF, AS PRESIDENT WEINGARTEN SAYS, NOBODY WANTS INEFFECTIVE TEACHERS IN THE CLASSROOM, THEN YOU CAN’T FIGHT US EVERY STEP OF THE WAY WHEN WE’RE MOVING IN THAT DIRECTION.”
