“Ubiquitous but opaque. Powerful but unaccountable. Ostensibly public spirited but relentlessly mercenary. Often shamed but unshakably shameless,” writes the WSJ’s Bret Stephens. Whom is Mr. Stephens describing? Ah yes, FIFA and, of course, the Clintons and their foundation.
In an attempt to organize the forthcoming World Cup in the Arab kingdom, the “Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee” gave the Clinton Foundation as much as $500,000. The state of Qatari itself gave the Foundation a tidy $5 million.
As Mr. Stephens notes, in light of serious allegations of bribery as well as Qatar’s dismal record of abusing foreign workers, Qatar’s successful bid for the Cup is one of the scandals of the age. According to the Clinton Foundation’s website, it will use the Qatari money to develop “sustainable infrastructure at the 2022 FIFA World Cup to improve food security in Qatar.”
“The Qatar story is suggestive of the way in which both FIFA and the Clinton Foundation work,” suggests Mr. Stephens. “Both organizations serve as portals through which shadowy people find their way, for a given price, into the light: the light of social respectability, the best parties, the right connections.”
In a related article on the Foundation, the WSJ’s Kimberley A. Strassel writes, “Clinton allies are insisting to all who listen that the foundation exists to do good. It does. It exists to do very good things for Hillary and Bill and all their longtime allies. And in that, it has succeeded beautifully.”
“When the media describe the Clintons as resilient or unsinkable or bulletproof—the ultimate ‘Comeback Kids’—what they really mean is that they are shameless. Nothing embarrasses them, so nobody stops them.” Read more from Bret Stephens here.
