UPDATE 3/29/22: Joe Biden’s recently released budget proposal includes the largest tax hike in history. Wealthy Americans will face a new minimum tax. Frighteningly, the tax would apply to unrealized gains for wealthy Americans. In addition to that nearly unworkable proposal, Biden proposes undoing the very successful Trump-era corporate tax reduction by pushing the rate […]
The Goldman Wars. Which Side Are You On?
So how are things going? Thanks to Ben Bernanke, not so well. You see, the Fed Chairman has decided that the way to artificially pump up the economy is to clamp the lid on the interest rates for two more years. The target rate on Fed funds is now basically zero. Such historically low borrowing costs are just dandy for Washington’s favorite New York trading crowd at Goldman Sachs, but far from fine for the savaged Boca Goldmans, Sid and Rhonda.
Bill Kristol, John Bolton, Joe Lieberman—All on the Wrong Track
Originally posted June 1, 2012. The Iraq and Afghan wars have been a mistake for America, just as were the Korean and Vietnam disasters.Almost without exception, the entrenched politicians in Washington, bullied by big industry and Wall Street lobbyists, toe the military/industrial complex line. Bill Kristol is the leading cheerleader, and John Bolton and Joe […]
Wilson’s WWI Folly
Originally posted June 17, 2014. America should have stayed out of WWI and instead practiced a strategy of armed neutrality. Here Cato Institute’s Jim Powell (author of Wilson’s War: How Woodrow Wilson’s Great Blunder Led to Hitler, Lenin, Stalin, and World War II) thoughtfully lays out the historical disaster of Woodrow Wilson’s WWI intervention policy, which straight […]
Kamala Harris Would Pass Gun Laws or Issue Executive Order
Sumantra Maitra of The Federalist writes (abridged): For someone living in the United Kingdom, the American Democratic primary debates looked very familiar, and almost cathartic. American politics used to be more muscular and substantive compared to contemporary performative and broadly procedural British politics. The British parliament and Foreign Office work essentially like glorified nongovernmental organizations. […]
Socialism – the Equal Sharing of Misery
Why, as Winston Churchill pointed out, is socialism capable of generating only misery? In echoing Churchill, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon recently warned shareholders that “socialism inevitably produces stagnation, corruption and often worse.” Socialism Buries Industry with Regulation “The textbook definition is government ownership of the means of production, as in the communist-run Soviet Union or […]
Understanding the Constitution from the Founders. Part 1
“On every question of construction [let us] carry ourselves back to the time when the Constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates, and instead of trying what meaning may be squeezed out of the text or invented against it, conform to the probable one in which it was passed.”-Thomas Jefferson
America: For Liberty not Democracy
As election 2020 begins to heat up, there undoubtedly will be many candidates discussing American “democracy.” Already Senator Kamala Harris has launched the opening salvo of democracy rhetoric in the announcement of her candidacy. But America was never meant to be a democracy. The word does not appear in the Constitution, and the founders were frightened […]

Is America Really the Land of the Free?
Americans are generally in agreement that their country is free. America is even referred to as “The Land of the Free,” but is it really? According to the Human Freedom Index published by the Cato Institute, the Fraser Institute, and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, America falls in at 17th place on The Human […]
