“Have you ever dreamed of getting to the Tennis Hall of Fame?” I saw this question posed on a billboard not too long ago on Memorial Boulevard in Newport, Rhode Island. The billboard featured Chris Everett from the class of 1995, and it continued with something like this: “It takes hard work and dedication. Or you can just take a left at the next set of lights.” Last weekend was Hall of Fame Weekend 2010 in Newport. This year’s inductees, including doubles champions Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde, joined 218 players from 19 countries, including Arthur Ashe ’85, Billie Jean King and Bjorn Borg ’87, Jimmy Connors ’98, John McEnroe ’99, Martina Navratilova ’00, and Pete Sampras ’07.

Nicolas Mahut, who battled John Isner for 11 hours and five minutes at Wimbledon this year in what is now known as “The Match,” donated some memorabilia to the museum. He also competed in the week-long Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships for the Van Alen Cup, which coincides with the inductee celebration and was won by Mardy Fish. The tournament and the inductions make it an enjoyable time in Newport for any tennis fan.

Even if your game isn’t good enough for the Hall of Fame, you too can play on the same courts as the pros. That’s because the oldest grass courts in America, 13 in all, are open to the public for rental May through September, with reservations suggested. Next year’s Campbell’s Hall of Fame Championships take place from July 4–10. If you plan on being in town I’d love to meet with you, so stop by our office. We’re just a couple forehands away.

How long do you think it would take you to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run 26.2 miles? Andy Potts did it last weekend in 8:24:40 (the eight being hours), winning the elite world-class Ironman Coeur d’Alene in Idaho.

Andy is a world-class triathlete known around the world for his versatility and accomplishments. You may recognize the name Andy Potts from the Olympics in Athens, Greece. Since then, he’s been setting course records and winning races around the world, including Escape from Alcatraz and the Ironman 70.3 World Championship (which consists of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, and 13.1-mile run).

I spoke with Andy Potts this week to congratulate him on his big win at Coeur d’Alene. He said, “Really pumped about my first Ironman win. I’ve made some changes to my training this year and they have paid off.” I think we’re lucky to have athletes and people like Andy, whose motto is “live your dreams.”

You won’t want to miss Andy Potts’s next race, so check out his website, www.andypottstri.com. Or you may want to enter a race with him. I’m sure he would be thrilled. He may beat you to the finish line, but knowing Andy, I bet he’d be the first one to congratulate you when you get there.

You can view the start to one of the greatest sailing races in the world, the 635-nautical-mile open ocean Newport to Bermuda race, from the lawn at Castle Hill. The race, founded in 1906, is held around this time every two years and is unique in that it is open to any boat that meets certain requirements. This year there were 188 boats making up five divisions with 15 classes, some with paid crews.

The fastest passage ever was in 48 hours, 28 minutes, 31 seconds (48:28:31) by 86-foot open division Morning Glory. The late Roy Disney tops the traditional division record with a time of 53:39:22. And this year Alex Jackson’s maxi 100-footer sloop, Speedboat, won in a time of just over 59 hours.

Baseball is buzzing once again, thanks to 21-year-old Washington Nationals pitching phenom Stephen Strasburg, who in his first two starts has two wins, 22 strikeouts, and thousands of new fans in awe of his effortless, fluid-like delivery and smoking 100-mph fastball. His next start is tonight at home against the White Sox. Thirty-dollar tickets that were once easy to come by at 41,546-seat Nationals Park are in high demand as fans flock to see this young and rare talent.

If you happen to be in Newport, Rhode Island, tonight, you might have better luck getting into a New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) game between host Newport Gulls and the Vermont Mountaineers at historic Cardines Field—a little bandbox of a stadium voted the fourth-best park in the United States for summer collegiate baseball by Baseball America Magazine.

Since it’s located just a minute’s walk from several waterfront restaurants, you can get a dozen littlenecks on the half shell, wash them down with a cold beer, and meander to the stadium around 6:30 p.m. to buy tickets at the door for less than five bucks. Wooden-bat summer ball is magical because you get to see young players up close who enjoy the game, are still developing their skills for the next level, and often are using wooden bats for the first time.

In 2007 Stephen Strasburg pitched in the NECBL for the Torrington Twisters, making 13 appearances in relief, compiling seven saves, a 1-0 record, and a 1.29 earned run average. Talents like Strasburg don’t come around very often, so when they do it’s fun to see them succeed as witnessed by the buzz surrounding his start this evening for the Nationals. It’s even more fun when you get to see such a talent before it becomes a star. So, even if you don’t see the next Strasburg when you’re in Newport, at the very least you’ll have an enjoyable summer evening at a Gulls game in the city by the sea.
