OK then, for those of you as concerned as Debbie and I are, here is the second in my list of inexpensive, easy-to-order personal survival items. I have owned all for a while, and I will add to my holdings of each in 2012:

(1) Henry U.S. Survival .22 rifle and a large quantity of CCI Stinger 22LR copper-plated 32 grain hollow point varmint ammo. This inexpensive, light (2.5 lbs.), accurate rifle packs up in a waterproof plastic stock and can be assembled and ready to fire in under a minute. Very cool. I love mine and am going to stock up with more for gifts and backup support.

(2) Boxes of Superfood Slam bars by PROBAR LLC. These whole food organic bars, loaded with Omega 3s, provide 380 calories per bar. Order these in bulk on your one-click Amazon account.

(3) My #2 water gathering/storage solution is WaterBrick, manufactured by Custom-Pak (bought through Amazon). You can transport water in lightweight fashion and stack the Bricks for easy storing.

(4) Perfect Food Raw Green Super Food. These organic capsules from Garden of Life are loaded with 34 nutrient-dense RAW greens, sprouts, and veggies. Debbie and I take these daily. You’ll feel as though you’ve been grazing on your lawn. Talk about Green and Chlorophyll. Once again Amazon can fill your order with a single click.

(5) New Chapter whole-food organic multivitamins (Amazon.com). These great multis offer stress, immune and cardio support and are manufactured with cultured whole-foods.

Remember, there is never any risk in being prepared! When the emergency finally hits, how do you explain to your loved ones why you failed to follow Dick Young’s emergency preparation advice?

Well, no doubt the all-time authority on the subject was my old friend Clifton Music’s Ronnie Italiano. Sadly, Ronnie has passed away, so I can no longer call him to get his answer for you. I’m in no way looking to cover for Ronnie, but I will tell you that the original Dion and the Belmonts was part of the royalty of the era.

In the following Q&A, you can catch up with Dion and enjoy some great memories from the 50’s music scene.

The Wall Street Journal: You came up when rock ‘n’ roll was still dawning on America, after Elvis and before the Beatles. You rocked the “The Ed Sullivan Show” in a tuxedo. Did you feel torn between two worlds?

Dion: I was the first rock ‘n’ roller signed by Columbia Records. Aretha Franklin was starting there at the same time. They were giving Aretha and me Al Jolson tunes; I was singing “Mammy;” she did “Rock-a-bye Your Baby With a Dixie Melody”—they didn’t know what we were about. From the beginning, before I recruited the Belmonts to record with me, [managers] told me to put the guitar down—leaders of groups don’t play guitar. They wanted to give me a nightclub act and book me in the Copacabana. They wanted to put me with corny backing singers—Broadway-trained guys who were great singing “Oklahoma!” but didn’t know from rock and roll. The show business era was — “Hey! How’s everybody doin’ tonight? Hope everybody’s fine!” The rock and roll attitude was —we don’t care how you feel about it; we’re taking you on a trip. “Let’s go!”

[The Wall Street Journal] Your new album, “Tank Full of Blues,” showcases your love for that music. When did you start filling your tank?

Way back at Columbia, John Hammond [the legendary producer who helped launch the careers of greats from Billie Holiday and Count Basie to Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen] pulled me into his office. He had this big grin and said “Dion, you seem to have a flair for the blues.” I left there with an armload of albums by Furry Lewis, Leroy Carr, Fred McDowell—and Robert Johnson. I never wanted to imitate those guys like Mick Jagger did—”I followed her to da stay-shun.” I thought if I did that I’d get killed at the Brooklyn Fox where Howlin’ Wolf and all the greats used to play. I met Bo Diddley at the Fox. He scowled at me and said “Where’d you learn to play blues like that?” I thought he was going to kill me. I said, “I listen to records.” He said, “Me, too.”

Finish reading the Q&A with Dion by clicking here.

After discussing with Debbie, Dion’s mention of Muddy Waters, she proudly noted, “I never saw Dion in person, but I did get to see Muddy, Chuck, Bo, Little Richard, and Jerry Lee.” Great remembrances for sure. Enjoy!

Warm regards,

Dick
What an awesome time. We learned so much more than we could ever have learned on our own. Deb and I stay in touch with David and are excited about his brand new Paris-centric food website. In coming months. I’ll bring you some of the highlights from David’s new endeavor. If you can luck out and get yourself into an upcoming David Lebovitz food tour, you will have won the equivalent of the Fine Foods of France lottery. If not, I hope you will enjoy some of David’s neat Paris highlights that I will be bringing you over the course of the coming year.

Asks Pat Buchanan in his editorial.

If we have learned anything over the last 100 years, the correct answer, of course, is not America. I do not believe Israel or the U.S. government (CIA) when it comes to foreign intervention, nor should you. With the exception of Ron Paul, no major 2012 presidential contender can be counted upon to stand against the neocon war drum influence. One hope for Americans is that the 2012 elections will include enough sensible voices in Congress to veto any such effort or at the least refuse to fund it. I, along with Ron Paul and the small group of on-the-ground CIA forces in Afghanistan, was for taking out bin Laden a decade ago. After the powers to be back home refused to send in the Rangers, the CIA forces requested to seal off the Pakistan border. Soon after that, it was Vaya con Dios for bL. Game over, right? Well not exactly, as American ground forces remain in Afghanistan today with no announced end game and with a green president who does not appear to know if he is on foot or on horseback. Give Pat’s essay a good read. As usual Mr. Buchanan is one of a handful of commentators who is not a pawn of the neocon, new world order, or income redistribution cabals.

How would your family be set on the food front with your big box supermarket closed? I would give the subject your immediate attention because a day after EMP attack or related national disaster, your big box outlet would likely be out of food and overrun. And if it is still operating for a few days, it would most likely be on a cash-and-carry basis with charge cards useless and ATMs down. First on your simple preparation list is a nice supply of cash. The Report of the Commission to Assess Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack devotes an entire chapter to Food Infrastructure. I sure do not like what I read and doubt you would. Supermarkets today stock only enough food to supply local populations for 1 to 3 days. That’s days not weeks, and my guess is that the jig would be up in less than 24 hours, with only well-armed cash holders in the game for even that long. I live on an island and have ridden out many the hurricane. Trust me, the minute the electricity blinks off, conditions begin to deteriorate at warp speed. In the event of an EMP attack, transportation and distribution is shown to be the weakest link in the food infrastructure chain. The same condition is true for all natural disasters, including hurricanes.

The Commission report makes clear that an EMP attack could potentially disrupt or collapse the food infrastructure over a large region encompassing many cities for a protracted period of weeks or months or even longer. Getting the message here? At the least figure out where you hit first to stock up, how you would get there, how you would pay, and how you would transport a large amount of food home. Don’t forget, most forms of transportation will be useless, as electrical systems will be instantly knocked out. Your car or truck will not start. Still with me here? There may be a tendency to brush off my warnings, but please remember, the preceding is 100% in line with the picture painted by the EMP commission.
U.S. Senator Jim DeMint from South Carolina now mentions embracing Libertarian concepts. The political winds in the U.S. have shifted. Voters are fed up with both major parties and realize that the best interests of American citizens have not been well represented in a long while. When it comes to cutting spending and downsizing government, no presidential candidate in my lifetime offers the message Ron Paul offers. And Dr. Paul’s message continues to resonate across America.

Here are five of my favorite survival items. I would not want to be without any of the five. After initially wading through the 181-page Report of the Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack, I began ramping up our already beefy personal survival program. The report recommends that the Department of Homeland Security should play a leading role in spreading knowledge of the nature of prudent preparations for EMP attack to mitigate its consequences. The physical consequences of a high altitude EMP attack on the United States, according to the report, would likely include the failure of the electric power grid and degradation of telecommunications systems, computers, and electronic components over large areas of the country. The country would almost certainly be engulfed in total chaos in a matter of days.

Take a few minutes and jot down a checklist of personal vulnerabilities. I don’t think you will like the look of your list. To downplay the threat of a massive infrastructure breakdown flies in the face of all I have read. It is time to get started on your full-scale family survival program. What is the downside of being prepared? As a helpful rule of thumb, I would target 1% of your liquid net worth to survival planning. If this sounds like big money to you, my guess is that you need to focus on your vulnerability a little more.

On that happy New Year’s note, here are five of my favorite survival items. You can add all to your survival program quickly and for light money. (1) Fresh Water. If you find any, how do you easily transport the water home? The simple answer is with the Reliance Hydroller (bought mine through Amazon) (2) Preserving Water. Water Preserver Concentrate is registered by federal and state EPA (also ordered at Amazon) (3) Self Defense. You don’t want to be without a shotgun (I have Mossbergs), and low-recoil ammo is a must. I buy Federal low recoil 00 buck online from Cabela’s. (4) Morning Joe. If you need your daily coffee jolt, you will soon have the shakes if you cannot fire up your electric coffee pot. Deb and I own a number of French presses. Water from your well, for example, can be boiled on a Webber or Green Egg. We love our French press. (5) Personal Protection. Now for the piece de resistance, the Travel Wrench. Yup, it looks like a plastic bike wrench and is clearly labeled Travel Wrench, but the TW is a first rate self-defense weapon. Mine is always in my side pocket. A single, well-aimed crack with the TW and a problematic attacker is out of the game (Check out the Travel Wrench here). Once again I bought these through my Amazon one click shopping account.

There you have it—five cheap-to-buy, easy-to-use and easy-to-order survival preparation must haves. Make a New Year’s resolution to get yourself on track with survival preparation. I am going to greatly expand on this theme in my monthly financial/personal security reports. You will be able to click here often and download my most recent updates. Coming to you soon: my next five survival favorites. You will want all! So Happy New Year to you all. Make it a good one.

Warm regards,

Dick
